On The Border Margaritas

Ever wonder about who created the Margarita?

Did you know that the history of the margarita is shrouded in mystery? There are no confirmed stories of who was the first to create the margarita. Although, there are several people that have claimed to create the famous tequila based cocktail that reminds us that it’s always 5 p.m. somewhere in the world.

One story says that a bartender named Danny Herrera created the drink when an actress named Marjorie King said she was allergic to every spirit but tequila. So he created a cocktail with tequila in it just for her and named it Margarita in honor of her.

Another claim was that a bartender named Pancho Morales invented the margarita when a woman requested a Magnolia. Morales was unsure about the whole recipe but remembered that there was Cointreau in it, so he improvised it on the spot. He named the creation after another flower (magnolia is a flower), the margarita, which means “daisy” in Spanish.

But another well-known story states that socialite Margaret Sames invented the margarita for her lavish parties. Apparently, Margaret was thinking up a recipe for a good drink for her guests that would go down easy. She used one part Cointreau, three parts tequila, and one part lime juice for her recipe. She insisted that Cointreau be used and not triple sec.
