It’s almost Father’s Day! Are you looking for an original idea to show your appreciation for your father this year? How about an American twist on a traditional Father’s Day celebration in Mexico?
Just like in the U.S., Father’s Day is always celebrated on the third Sunday in June. This is a day where families get together to show appreciation for their fathers. In the Mexican culture, fathers are not the only notable family member, but father figures are celebrated as well. This is a day for fathers, uncles, and grandfathers!
In Mexico City, Father’s Day is celebrated with families’ participation in the annual Carrera Día del Padre 21K Bosque de Tlalpan. 31 years ago, this half marathon was created and has continued to be a Mexican tradition. Families participate in a number of different races throughout the day, the most popular being the Father and Son Race. These races are followed by a carnival-type event where traditional Mexican food is served and families are able to discuss the outcomes of the event.
Obviously, it would be difficult to travel to Mexico City to participate in these races with your father, but why not try something local? Start your own Carrera Día del Padre! Take your dad on a hike at Mission Trails or to the top of Cowles Mountain. This could be the start of an annual, healthy tradition for you and your family.
Be sure to top off your family’s new “Mexican tradition” with a meal and a margarita at one of our On the Border locations. We have plenty of space for you and your entire family to discuss your hike and show your appreciation for your father. Don’t forget about your uncle and grandfather!
